electricity learning #2

Today we observed a machine that would make things float above it, and if you touched it it would shock you. It was called a Van De Graff, it had a big metal ball at the top, and a rubber track that rubbed some metal at the top and bottom that transferred electrons. Threw this activity I learned that electrons will push off on each other, and that electrons are like tinny magnets in a way and can be very useful. When we blew bubbles at the machine the baubles avoided it, as if they had the same charge. Next we each held hands with two people touching the Van De Graff. Then we turned it on. No one was shocked, but the electricity traveled through us as if we were a wire. If someone who wasn't a part of the chain tuched on of us they would be shocked because of a discharge of our electricity would go to them. Next we put one napkin on top of the machine and it made the napkin flote off. Then we put many napkins on it and it stayed still but was clicking and making noizes. Then we taped strips of paper to the machine and they were pulled upwards. Then we put cheerios on top and they flou off aswell. most of the experiments we did had there effects because the electrons were pushing away from eachother, or they were charging something, and not the other.

I was wondering if it is possible to get any substance to push off its self when charged with electrons, even liquids.

Electricity learning #1

There were three stations in the class activity. One of them we used a balloon to pick up peaces of paper using static electricity. It was just like picking something up with a magnet, but the balloon lost its charge over time. The next we had two strands of tape and we hung them next to each other, when we did they pushed each other away, because they had like charges. We did not have to do anything to the tape it just worked. The last station we were suppose to do something with tape which I nor my team understood. I know from my experience with the other stations that the tape was going to pull on each other or repel each other.

Since i learned that electricity is made up of electrons i began to wander how a electric engine works. At first i thought that maybe the engine absorbed the electrons some how and that's what made it go. But it didn't seem like a sufficient answer. So I thought about it, and i came to the conclusion that the electrons gathered on the metal coils inside the engine and pushed off of each other which spins the engine.

Five element theory

The five element theory is made of these five elements. Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal. Each of these relates to a sertant part of your body or mind. Like Wood resembles leaders, and fire represents impatience. Each of the elements make each other in a never ending circle. Wood makes Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth makes Metal, Metal Makes Water, and Water makes Wood. This theory was made by the ancient Chinese to make sense of why thing are the way they are.

Guantánamo's end?

Quote:
The prison at Guantánamo Bay will be the sore that fails to heal, oozing hatred for years to come.

About:
Guantanamo bay is a prison where the united states keeps its suspect terrorists. About 250 prisoners are being held and without a legal reason. Guantanamo bay is a misuse of power and spits on Americas reputation of democracy. Guantanamo bay has created more terrorists and enemies than they have possibly captured. Guantanamo bay just may be closing soon.

Apply:
Guantanamo is like big brothers holding cell. Its captures innocent, and the way they find these people is an invasion of privacy, and without trial or strong proof. i don't mind them capturing suspects but without a trial or legal approval is wrong because they probably have American citizens in there as well.

Singnals

Quote:
A Whisper, Perhaps, From the Universe’s Dark Side.

About:
A growing number of astronomers and physicists think they may be receiving signals from the shadow universe. The shadow universe is made of dark mater. Dark mater makes up one quoter of all creation. Scientists don't know too much about dark matter and it is sparse in our universe. There is a dark mater generator that is going to be put back into use at the Geneva convention next summer. One explanation is that dark matter that is split often in space can make signals when it explodes.

(Dark matter is more powerful than nuclear energy. With the same amount of volume as a penny you could send a space shuttle to the moon about 37 times.)

Apply:
If more people knew about the crazy stuff that is out there we would have more scientists. Dark matter isn't that practical at the moment because we are unable to mass produce it and one atom of it wont do much good.

"Born to Run? Little Ones Get Test for Sports Gene"

About:
A genetics test is available that can tell you what sports your child might be best at. The tests only coast $149 and can help your child get a scholarship or a career as an adult. Certain parts of the DNA show whether he/she will be better at power and speed or endurance. But these tests are at best unreliable and rely up to the child of what interests him or her the most. Studies have shown that some of the top athletes have multiple gene variants of what they actually play.

Apply it:
I would not use one of these test just yet because they arent very realistic to what a person can be good at and the tests aren't detailed enough to give you a good idea anywase.

collective intelligence

Quote: "Orwellian future on a level Big Brother could only dream of."
About:
New technologies in collective intelligence threatin a society under big brother's shadow. At M.I.T. some students have done experiments with phones. They can see when you email, text, call, who you talk to, who you talk to, when you're not using your phone by tracking multiple phones, where you go, and where you live.

Apply it:
Some say that it can be used in a positive manner, like to commercialise social events and advertise. Some say that it is only a small drop in the bucket because we all have Facebook and Myspace or blogs. So anyone could already know too much about anyone.
