Siddhartha 1

Siddhartha 1

Quote p.73
He had often heard all this before, these many voices in the river, but today it sounded new.

1= I think that he meant he has herd the water speak to him many times before and in many different ways with different voices it has spoken to him. But this time as it spoke to him is sounded different the voice was not one voice but all the voices of the river. He heard it in a new way because he was listening and that was all he was doing.

2= I could apply this to my life by listening to a river or a stream just like he did and think about what it said to him and see if it can say things to me. I could listen to all things in nature. When I listen I could completely devote my self to listening with my full attention.

Quote p.78
The things may be illusions or not; if they are, I, too, am illusory, and so they continue to be of the same nature as myself.

1= I think he meant that if trees and rocks and all matter were illusions then he too was an illusion. He too would be an illusion if everything of his kind was an illusion that there would be no illusion because illusion wouldn’t exist. He and the rock, tree, and the water are all made of the same things.

2= I could apply this to my life by learning from Siddhartha to know that I’m not an illusion and that everything is as real as I am. In addition, I am not something else’s illusion.

siddhartha 3

Siddhartha 3

quote
Or because I have escaped, because my gateway is accomplished, because I am finally free again and standing beneath the sky as a child?

1= I think it means that he has escaped his worries, his responsibilities as a Samana, or that he escaped the life of the child people. It could have also been that he was not being controlled by money or pleasure any more. My gateway has been accomplished could mean that he had his a sertent turning point or that he had passed through a state of mind into a new one, a better one. He is free once again and in his new life he has new hope and intrest in the world. He finds things that are regular to him as fascinating now.
2= Sometimes stopping for a moment and enjoying yourself and nacher can be enlightening.

quote
“it is good,” he thought, “to taste for yourself everything you need to know.

1= He means that it gives you more experience, knowledge, decision making, and a possible better future to learn thing first hand. He tasted the life of the child people. He tasted the life of the Samana. He tasted the life of wealth, and poverty. He knows what its like to starve and to get fat. He knows the life of sorrow and destruction, but he also knows the life of health and spirituality.
2= I could go and see what it is like to live in other countries. I could play sports I’ve never played before. I could fast for a day to see what it would be like to starve.

Siddhartha 2

Siddhartha # 2

quote 1 p.41
Slowly the way that moisture penetrates a dying tree stump, slowly filling it and making it rot, the world and imbalance had penetrated Siddhartha’s sold; slowly it had fille dhis soul, making it heavy, making it weary, and lulling it to sleep.

1=
This was a negative quote. I think it means that Siddhartha has lost himself in his new life. He has lost the things about being a Samana that he loves. Every day he is becoming more and more like the town’s people. The new ways were slowly seeping threw and the old were falling away. Because they were coming in slowly he did not notice it making his soul faint to him. This seems to be a negative quote because he is comparing it to death.

2=
I can apply this to my life by doing things I used to do. I can also remember who I am and where I come from.

Quote 2 p.42
he played out of his heart’s distress; to lose and squander his wretched money gave him an angry joy; in no other way could he show more clearly and scornfully his contempt for wealth, the false idol of the merchant class.

1=
I think this quote was showing pity and grief. He craved riches but hated them. When he became rich he thought riches would bring happiness. But he idolized money and it brought him no joy. He tried to get rid of his money by gambling it all away. Fear of the drastic lows of a negative role was the closest thing to happiness left for him.

2=
I could apply this to my life by not centering my life on money. I shouldn’t center my life on one thing alone. I also shouldn’t let anything dominate my mind or idolize things like money or possessions.

Socratic Seminar

Seminar topic - chapter seventy one.

I think everyone did well in the seminar. I liked that everyone shared their thots. I liked that everyone was involved and spoke. I think it was a good idea to have the seminar on a philosophical topic so we could think of multiple subjects and meanings off of one sentence.

tai chi

I liked Tia chi. i liked it because is was calming and fun when we were feeling our chi between our hands. The moving Tia chi i couldn't feel any chi. I don't think we were really feeling chi though it was probably because most of the blood was drained from our hands and because we were moving them.

vocab

the main idea of this article is to build a skyscaper that can support a farm. The bulding
is planed to be therty stories high. the reason they want to do this is because it will bring the food closer to the city. they can also protect and nercher the plants in a very welly controled invirment. I think it will make the energy crysis worce it is determanant that all the lites to give plants energy would not be able to be generated by primitive solerpannels. It would be very dificult for them to keep demesticated animals in a sedentary state in the bulding insted of a semi-nomadic life style. They will put firtile dert on each flore. they will irrigate and coltivat it too.
